Heritage Day to celebrate hosting of World Cup

This year’s national Heritage Day will honor the contribution made by all South Africans in making the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament a success, Cabinet said on Thursday.

The day, which normally celebrates South Africa’s rich and diverse culture, will shift the focus to the successful hosting of the World Cup, which has instilled a spirit of hope and the believe that the country can achieve even greater things.

“The successful hosting of the tournament has become part of our legacy, national heritage and will always be a source of inspiration and hope to future generations,” government spokesperson Themba Maseko said on Thursday.

The day recognises aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and intangible, the creative expression such as music and performances and our historical inheritance, language, the food and craft.

Various celebratory events have been planned to mark the day themed ‘Celebrating 2010 FIFA World Cup successes: Our Heritage’.

The main event will be take place at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban on the 24 September, where President Jacob Zuma will address the event.
