Barriers and Motivation

Unlike children and teenagers, adults have many responsibilities that they must balance against the demands of learning. Because of these responsibilities, adults have barriers against participating in learning. Some of these barriers include lack of time, money, confidence, or interest, lack of information about opportunities to learn, scheduling problems, “red tape,” and problems with child care and transportation.

Motivation factors can also be a barrier. What motivates adult learners? Typical motivations include a requirement for competence or licensing, an expected (or realized) promotion, job enrichment, a need to maintain old skills or learn new ones, a need to adapt to job changes, or the need to learn in order to comply with company directives.

The best way to motivate adult learners is simply to enhance their reasons for enrolling and decrease the barriers. Instructors must learn why their students are enrolled (the motivators); they have to discover what is keeping them from learning. Then the instructors must plan their motivating strategies. A successful strategy includes showing adult learners the relationship between training and an expected promotion.

 

R21 million bursary deadline for North West youths is fast approaching

There are 71 bursaries worth more than R21 million available for North West youths to apply for and further their education and training and acquire skills that are scarce in the province including civil engineering to accounting, architecture and anthropology.

In order to address the province’s critical shortage of skills, the North West Premier’s office is calling on all learners and unemployed youths residing in the province to apply for the bursaries and further their education and training on a full-time basis at tertiary institutions.

Other available courses include community development studies, LLB degrees, civil engineering, quantity surveying, BSc Occupational Therapy, BSc Speech Therapy, BSc Agric, aviation, town planning, supply chain management, archival studies and records management, financial management, amongst others.

For all those interested, application forms can be obtained from the Office of the Premier, district communication offices, district and local municipality offices and labour centres across the province.

The only conditions and requirements for the bursaries is that all applicants must have passed matric in the previous years or they must already be studying at tertiary institutions. Preference will be given to those applicants from poor areas or those who are performing well academically but are in need of financial assistance. People with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply

The deadline for submission is January 10.
