8 Hot Tips to find you YOUR next role and position

Being unemployed after working ones whole career is an awfully discouraging space to find one self. Here are a few things that you can do, that will give you purpose and focus and will ensure you find that next great position. The best tip for YOU is to treat this as the SINGLE most important PROJECT you have ever managed.

So lets begin…

1.Ask someone in your circle to be YOUR person, remember when you were employed, you had KPA’s, well this person is who you are going to report.

This person should be someone that you can look up too, someone that will push you when you are feeling discouraged and gently remind you that there are things you have to be doing daily to ensure you find your new role. YOUR person is your disciplinarian and cheer leading squad. Like at work, you always have someone in your corner.

2. Keep up to date with what is trending in the world

Do not fall into the slot of cutting yourself off. Everyday people are making small talk when they do groceries, buying milk, etc. Keep up to date with news and what is trending in the business world, as you never know who you are talking too. Also when you get to your interview, you will be on top of your game.

3. Join Toastmasters or a weekly Networking Events in your area

You have an opportunity right now to network. Meet new people, hear what they are doing and you will be amazed at the amount of opportunities that exist. What these events do is connect you to the business world in a meaningful way. Have a business card made, create a title for yourself as you would like to be known right now. Have fun and get out there.

4. Sign up for THAT course

You know that course you have been meaning to do as it intrigues you. Well do it now. Sign up and read up and learn something new. You never know this maybe a time where your career change may happen.

5. Do NGO work

You will be surprised how many people need help. You have time on your hands and an amazing skill set. So offer it to the wider community. This network long-term will be invaluable.

6. Join groups that are relevant to your job search on-line

Find this group or groups, now is the time to leverage that gravitas you have. It adds weight to your CV and you stay in touch with other individuals that do what you do.

7. Socialise with friends and acquaintances

People, lets face it, the IMMEDIATE group who will know you are unemployed are your friends. Share your CV with them, let them look in their company, offer to attend their company functions, use this opportunity to network.

8. Applications for roles

Do not apply at random for a role, make a list of your top 20 companies. Go look at their website for vacancies, join their linked In groups, Join their Linked In pages etc. Make yourself know. Connect with the HR person that is positing the job onto the social media platforms. Once you have applied, you follow-up with a courteous email. Stay in touch. Be in control.
