The 2012 VSS Photography and Visual Arts Update

With the closing of a great year, filled with creative photography and visual arts, we at Visual Skills School (VSS) are looking forward to an even more successful and adventurous 2012.

Although the administration department at VSS closes on 15 December 2011, for the festive season, and reopens on 8 January 2012, registration for full-time as well as part-time photography and visual arts courses remains open until 15 January 2012.

Part time classes, Photography & Graphic Design, start on Monday 23 January at 18h00. First years start on 1 February and Second Years on 6 February.

Please take early note of our exciting photography expeditions planned for 2012, in order to plan your schedule accordingly:

10 – 12 February: a weekend of available light photography on location at Botshabelo.

16 – 23 March: we will spend a week in Victoria-West, where three lecturers from VSS will be among the principle presenters at the Photographic Society of South Africas Audio Visual Convention. VSS students will assist in the presentation of workshops. Spicing up this adventure, we will travel to the heart of the Karoo, befittingly in a manner reminiscent of yesteryear by way of train! The Shosholoza Meyl, linking Johannesburg with Cape Town, is an experience not to be missed.

31 May – 10 June: 10 days of underwater photography and great rock music at Ponta dOuro, Mozambique. Where we coincide our underwater photography expedition with the annual Strab Rock festival.

10 – 14 August: 5 days of nature and wildlife photography at Pilanesberg Game Reserve, with day visits to Sun City and an old VSS favourite, the Shebeen!

22 September – 7 October: the VSS adventure highlight of the year two weeks of unparalleled nature and wildlife photography in the pristine Botswana wilderness! Imagine the serene beauty of the Okavango Delta; the largest herds of elephant in Africa; a golden sunset over the Magadi-Gadi saltpans, silhouetting swarms of flamingoes; the call of the Fish Eagle on the Chobe River; the smoke that thunders (Mosi-oa-Tunya the Victoria Water Falls)? Now imagine photographing all this, and more with VSS!

With these adventures, and countless exciting hours in the classroom, studio and dark room (both digital and analogue), VSS aims to equip students with the skill and technical ability to excel in the photography and visual media industry.

To all our students, thank you for a fantastic year of great fun, and above all the exceptional quality of work displayed at the VSS 2011 end-of-year exhibition.

We wish you all joy and peace for the festive season see you 2012!
