When searching for gifts for friends and family back home, steer clear of cheap, imported souvenirs. Rather take some digital photographs of some of your favourite moments. You could choose the most special ones to share when you get home.
If you do want to bring home some goods from abroad, support local artists and craftspeople by buying their wares. Just make sure that anything you purchase is made out of renewable and sustainable materials. Always bargain fairly – informal traders are often desperate to sell their wares, so don’t take advantage of poverty by bargaining unnecessarily. ( Remember that helping to reduce poverty is equal to helping the environment as poor people are often forced to over exploit land and natural resources in order to survive.)
